Amazon Jungle

Tomorrow we are headed back to Peru for 17 days on a mission trip to the Amazon jungle. We will be leading a group of friends from a church in Tennessee to the jungle. They have never been there before. We will be visiting and ministering to local tribes and we will have a baptism in the Amazon River.

Yes, there will be piranhas lurking all around us when we baptize in the Amazon, so please pray for us. Normally the piranhas leave us alone as long as no one is bleeding - so I'm not even going to shave between now and the time of the baptism next week!

Beginning later on this week, I will be blogging from Lima, Peru, the capital city, as well as from Iquitos, Peru, the largest Peruvian city in the Amazon. The jungle trip is going to be a blast, so be sure to read all upcoming blog posts about it and, once again, please pray for our safety and for the various ministry and evangelistic opportunities that we will have in the jungle as we become the hands and feet of Jesus to the tribes and locals there, all along the Amazon River.

Ask + Know + Obey = Wisdom

Frequently we pray that God grants wisdom to a person. But asking God to grant wisdom is only 1/3 of the wisdom equation.

Being truly wise involves 3 steps:

1. Ask God for wisdom.

2. Know that He will give it.

3. Obey what He says to do.

A person has to ask God first. That's what Solomon did in 2 Chronicles 1:10 (TNIV) when he asked for "wisdom and knowledge." Solomon similarly asked God for "a discerning heart" in 1 Kings 3:9 (TNIV).

God then gave Solomon what he had asked for. 2 Chronicles 1:11 (TNIV) says that God was pleased that Solomon had not asked for "wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies ... (nor) a long life ...." So God granted Solomon the wisdom and knowledge that he had requested.

Part 3 is the hardest part. Sometimes, in granting us wisdom, knowledge, and a discerning heart, God reveals things that may go against a person's own grain, desires, or will. But we must submit our own will to His will for us, and we must yield our own will to His will for us.

Don't just pray that God grants wisdom to a person. Pray that the person first asks God for it, then know that he/she will receive it, and then, finally and just as importantly, pray that the person is obedient to what God says.

Part 3 - obedience - is always the hardest step to take.

But it is also the most spiritually rewarding.

Eternal Impact

Will you have an eternal impact on this world?

When your time on this planet is done and you have entered into eternity, will what you have done here have had an eternal impact?

We waste so much of our lives - and even our ministries - on trivial things.

Think back on things that were important to you 1, 5, 10, and even 20 years ago. Are they still important today? Or were they only important for a season? Or were they really ever that important at all?

Focus on having an eternal impact.

In Matthew 7:16 (TNIV) and again in Matthew 7:20 (TNIV), Jesus states, "By their fruit you will recognize them."

In John 15:5 (TNIV) and again in John 15:8 (TNIV), Jesus exhorts his disciples (and us) to "bear much fruit." In John 15:16 (TNIV), Jesus exhorts his disciples (and us) to bear "fruit that will last."

Bear much fruit. Bear fruit that will last. Bear fruit that will have an eternal impact in this world.

Twain was right. A good compliment energizes a person and lends a healthy confidence to its recipient.

Be generous with your compliments. You will uplift others and you will spur them on to greater achievements.

Proverbs 12:25 (NKJV) says, "Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad."

In Proverbs 25:11 (NKJV), Solomon adds, "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver."

Fill your world with good words fitly spoken. They're as valuable as gold and silver.

Courage

Walt Disney once said, "Courage is the main quality of leadership. Usually it implies risk."

Leadership = the courage to take risks.

Are you courageous?

Do you have the intestinal fortitude to take risks?

Joshua, when he was succeeding Moses as the leader of the Israelites, was told no less than five different times to be strong and courageous. Joshua was told not to be afraid, and not to be discouraged. Joshua was told that God would never leave him nor forsake him, and that God would be with him wherever he went.

It's the same for you and for me as it was for Joshua. It's very easy for us today to become afraid and discouraged, and to get caught up in a maelstrom of worries and fear and doubt. But God wants us to look upward, not inward, for strength. When we look upward, instead of inward, for our strength, then we claim the same promise as Joshua, that God will never leave us nor forsake us, and that He will be with us wherever we go.

Be courageous. Take risks. Lead boldly. Don't be afraid. God's got your back.

Not I, But Christ

When we were at Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, USA, last weekend, as part of the Liberty Univeristy commencement activities, I happened to pick up a TRBC bumper sticker which read, simply and profoundly, "Not I, But Christ."

Not I, but Christ.

The bumper sticker was a shortened version of the words of Paul, as found in Galatians 2:20 (KJV), when he wrote to the brothers and sisters of the church in Galatia, "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me ...."

Not I, but Christ.

According to Pastor John MacArthur, in his Study Bible notes, Paul's words in Galatians 2:20 signify that " (the) believer's old self is dead, having been crucified with Christ. The believer's new man has the privilege of the indwelling Christ, empowering him and living through him."

Does the world see you, or Christ?

Does the world see Christ indwelling in you, and empowering you, and living through you ... or does the world just see you?

Remember what the world needs to see: "Not I, But Christ."

Our Daily Bread

In Matthew 6:11 (TNIV), as part of his teaching on prayer in his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us to pray, "Give us today our daily bread."

What exactly is our daily bread?

It consists of our daily needs, necessities, provisions, and petitions.

It may vary from day to day.

Our daily bread is fresh bread. It is not stale bread left over from yesterday.

Our daily bread is provision that is sufficient for today.

Our daily bread is consumed with the confidence and faith that God is going to bake a fresh loaf of daily bread again for you tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that.

God provided daily bread in the form of manna to the Israelites for 40 years. Each day (except for the day before the Sabbath) the Israelites were allowed to collected only enough manna as they needed for that day. They were prohibited from collecting or hoarding any additional manna for additional days, except for the Sabbath. In a way it was a test of their faith, to see if they truly believed that God would meet their daily provisions, every single day, for 40 years.

Would you pass a similar test of your faith?

Do you really trust God for your daily provision and your daily needs - your daily bread - or do you hoard and are you afraid that He might not really be up to the task?

Jesus said to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread."

That means that God is up to the task of meeting your needs and necessities, your provisions and petitions, on a daily basis. Every single day.

Walk into God's heavenly bakery every day.

Fresh bread is waiting for you.

Daily.

Never Too Old

Abram was 75 when God told him to leave his country, his people, and his father's household and to go to the land that God would show him.

Moses was 80 when God told him to stop tending sheep for his father-in-law and to go to Pharaoh and to bring the Israelites out of Egypt and toward the promised land.

Sarah was 90 when she gave birth to a baby boy. Sarah thought that the idea of a 90-year-old woman giving birth was so hilarious that she named the baby boy "Isaac", which means "he laughs." The boy's father, the aforementioned Abram, was 100.

Noah was 500 when God told him to build an ark. Then he had to wait 100 years before the rain started to fall.

Never use age as an excuse to not serve God.

And I know what you're thinking: well, all of these examples are Bible heroes, from back in the day when it seemed like everybody lived to be 969 like Methuselah.

OK, then here's a few modern day (and some albeit secular) examples of people who didn't let age stop them from accomplishing great things:

Pastor George Foreman was 45 when he regained the heavyweight championship of the world in 1994.

Ronald Reagan was 56 when he first held political office as the Governor of California in 1967.

Ray Kroc was 59 when he purchased McDonald's from the McDonald brothers in 1961 and began to franchise the fast-food hamburger restaurant all around the world.

Harlan Sanders was 65 when he first began to franchise Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1955.

So what's your excuse?

It had better not be your age.

Success & Perseverance

Winston Churchill once defined success as "going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm."

Perseverance plays a key role in achieving success. It is rare for a person to achieve success right away, be it in business or ministry or missions or church planting. Abraham Lincoln lost six political elections before he was elected as the 16th President of the United States. Henry Ford and Walt Disney both declared bankruptcy before achieving phenomenal success in their respective fields of automobiles and entertainment.

James 1:3-4 (TNIV) says that "the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Don't give up or quit if you are starting something new and you're not achieving success - however you define it - as fast as you would like. We are always in a hurry, but God never is. Persevere. Keep moving forward. Don't throw in the towel. God-honoring and God-glorifying success is on the way.

Time Flies

Tomorrow my wife, Dorcas, and I are traveling to Lynchburg, Virginia, USA, to attend the graduation exercises at Liberty University, where Dorcas' brother, Christian, will be one of the graduates.

It is amazing to think that four years have passed by so quickly. I can still remember July of 2006 so vividly, when God worked a miracle to get Christian accepted into Liberty with head-spinning rapidity, well after the normal application deadline had passed for everyone else.

One lesson that I've learned between July 2006 and May 2010: time flies.

Psalm 102:3 (TNIV) talks of how "my days vanish like smoke", and Psalm 102:11 (TNIV) says, "My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass." In Psalm 103:15-16 (TNIV), David sings, "As for mortals, their days are like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more."

Four years have felt like four minutes since the moment that Christian first packed his bags in 2006 and headed off to Liberty University. Now it's 2010, four years later, and he's graduating.

Four years have passed like smoke, like an evening shadow, like grass, like a flower of the field.

Or like dust in the wind, as Kansas sang.

Your time on this planet is vanishing quickly, and perhaps quicker than you even think or know. Don't get caught short. "Make the most of every opportunity," as Ephesians 5:16 (TNIV) tells us. Redeem the time.

For all we are is dust in the wind.

Super-Size

How big is God to you?

Is He only as big as your largest problem or your biggest fear?

Is He even that big to you?

Do you worship a big-G God or a small-g god?

Joshua 1:9 (TNIV) says, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Psalm 118:6-7 (TNIV) says, "The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can human beings do to me? The Lord is with me; He is my helper. I look in triumph on my enemies."

Do you know what you need to do with God?

You need to super-size Him.

Persevere

Perseverance is hard. It may mean going beyond the point of comfort, ease, and understanding in your life and ministry, and entering into a valley of pain, difficulty, and uncertainty.

Hebrews 10:35-36 (TNIV), however, tells us that we must persevere: "So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised."

Perseverance leads to reward. Pastor John MacArthur, in his Study Bible commentary on verse 35, says that those who were the recipients of this epistle were "closer than ever to the eternal reward. It is no time to turn back."

The same holds true for us today. It's no time to turn back.

Life and ministry may be bludgeoning you these days, but stand firm. Hang on. Don't quit. Don't give up. Don't throw in the towel. Persevere.

Your reward is coming. Soon and very soon.

It's no time to turn back. It's time to persevere.

Who You Could Be

Author John Eldredge has written, "Your life can be described as a long and sustained assault on your heart by the enemy who knows who you could be and fears you."

Imagine that: the enemy actually fears YOU!

Peter called the enemy "a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8), but in fact the enemy may be nothing more than a timid kitten instead of a lion when he sees what great things you can do in God's name and for His kingdom.

Paul quotes Isaiah 64:4 when he writes in 1 Corinthians 2:9 (TNIV), "What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived - these things God has prepared for those who love Him." In Ephesians 3:20 (TNIV), Paul talks about "him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us." And in Philippians 1:6 (TNIV), Paul remarks that "he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

God has big plans for you - more than you could ever conceive or ask or imagine. He knows it - and so does the enemy. Don't fear the enemy.

Know that he fears you.
