George

George Washington, who was born on this day in 1732, and who was the first President of the United States and the main hero of its Revolutionary War, once observed:

"It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible."

George was right on target.

Washington's words also bring to mind even earlier words found in Romans 13:1 (NIV):

"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

We need to pray for our governing authorities, no matter where we live in the world.

Do you pray for your president, your governor, your senators, your congressional representative, your local authorities, your prime minister, your king, or your queen?

Or do you disagree with those persons' politics, and therefore disregard them in your prayers?

Remember that God is not a Republican or a Democrat. He is the member of no political party.

God does, however, want us to pray for our political leaders, no matter their political stripes.

Pray that your political leaders govern with God and the Bible.

It's the most important thing that you can ever do for them.

"Only the gentle are ever really strong."

Obscene

Mae West was a huge star of stage and screen, mainly back in the 1920s and 1930s. She was one of America's most well-known sex symbols during that era. One time a Broadway show in which she starred was closed down due to protests by various members of the New York City clergy who deemed West's performance "obscene."

Mae West responded to the NYC clergy, "I'll tell you what's obscene. It's you preachers who are supposed to be men of God, but live like rich men instead of calling your people and yourselves to give what you have to meet the needs of the poor. I'll tell you what's obscene. It's churches that spend thousands of dollars for stained glass windows and claim that's what Jesus would do with the money."

Wow.

When God uses a sex symbol to speak as a prophet, we'd better listen.

Everybody Plays The Fool

In 1 Corinthians 4:10 (NKJV), the apostle Paul writes to the church of God in Corinth, "We are fools for Christ's sake!"

In calling himself a fool for Christ's sake, Paul actually was rebuking the Corinthians, who had a proud and haughty manner. The Corinthians would never allow themselves to become fools for Christ. They were above that.

How's your attitude these days?

Do you see yourself as above certain types of work, labor, or ministry?

In 1 Corinthians 4:12 (NKJV), Paul would add that "we labor, working with our own hands." Once again he was rebuking the Corinthians with his words, as they considered manual labor as something beneath their dignity and fit only for slaves. Paul thought otherwise.

Can you be a fool for Christ? Would you be a fool for Christ? Many of us would not. Many of us would place our pride, our dignity, our reputation, our self-perceived coolness, and our self-perceived hipness all above submitting to be a fool for Christ.

"Everybody Plays The Fool" was a song sung first by Main Ingredient, and later covered by Aaron Neville. But it's a song that few Christ followers want to sing.

And that's just plain ... foolish.

God's Checklist

Have you ever really wondered what God wants from you?

Here's a 3-part checklist, courtesy of Micah 6:8:

1. Act justly.

2. Love mercy.

3. Walk humbly with your God.

They all appear to be so basic and easy for us to accomplish, but the world's pressures and distractions can make them awfully difficult for us to actually achieve. Nonetheless, they are what God requires of us.

Birthday

Today is my birthday, and so I offer to you all the following quote from the renowned Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, who lived to age 91:

"It takes a long time to grow young."
