Gray Hair

Bill Cosby once observed:

"Gray hair is God's graffiti."

It is the perfect quote for a world which tends to celebrate youth at the expense of age, wisdom, experience, and seniority.

Job 12:12 (TNIV):

"Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?"

Perhaps gray is God's favorite color.

Rope

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt led the United States through its Great Depression in the 1930s, a time of grave economic woes for the nation, all of which was occurring while Europe stood on the brink of the start of the century's second world war.

In the USA, unemployment, foreclosures, bankruptcies, and suicides were at all-time highs during the Great Depression.

In the midst of this searing economic crisis, FDR told the nation and the world:

"When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."

Two passages from Isaiah also fortified many people during that tumultuous era:

Isaiah 41:10 (TNIV):

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Isaiah 43:2 (TNIV):

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."

When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.

The God of Isaiah, Israel, and all of us will strengthen you, help you, uphold you, and He will always be with you.

Plans

An African proverb:

"Man plans. God laughs."

Psalm 33:11 (TNIV):

"But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations."

Isaiah 46:11 (TNIV):

"What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do."

What are your plans today?

Did you check with God about them yet?

Did you check with God to see if He is laughing?

Genius & Patience

Michelangelo, who was born on this day in 1475, once observed:

"Genius is eternal patience."

James 1:4 (NKJV):

"But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

Patience: it's an extremely hard lesson to learn in life, but it pays off in eternal dividends.

Doubt

Franklin D. Roosevelt, the man who led the USA through its Great Depression and World War II, was inaugurated for the first of four times on this day in 1933.

FDR once observed:

"The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today."

FDR's words, uttered during a time of excruciating challenge, both in the USA and worldwide, also bring to mind the words of Jesus to Peter when Peter walked on water but then began to sink when he focused more on the wind and the waves than on Jesus Himself:

Matthew 14:31 (NKJV): "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"

Is doubt shrinking your faith and limiting your realization of tomorrow?

Focus more on Jesus and less on life's wind and waves.

Michelangelo

Michelangelo:

"Many believe - and I believe - that I have been designated for this work by God. In spite of my old age, I do not want to give it up; I work out of love for God and I put all my hope in Him."

Colossians 3:23 (NKJV):

"And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men."
