Roberto Clemente

Roberto Clemente was one of the greatest baseball players in the history of our National Pastime. Clemente played 18 seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates, leading the club to a pair of World Series championships in 1960 and 1971. Clemente won 12 Gold Gloves during his career and was a 15-time National League All-Star. He amassed 3,000 hits over the course of his brilliant career and is enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Roberto Clemente also was a man of great compassion. On December 31, 1972, Clemente boarded a plane bound for Nicaragua. He was travelling to Nicaragua to deliver aid to earthquake victims there. The plane carrying Clemente probably was overloaded with food and supplies for the Nicaraguan earthquake victims. The plane crashed shortly after it took off. Clemente was killed. He was just 38 years old.

Roberto Clemente was a Christian who showed his faith through his works. He was using his off-season time not just to rest or relax, but to help others in dire need of assistance in Nicaragua. Clemente is a great example of someone who obeyed James 2:17 and James 2:26 (NKJV), "(17) Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead ... (26) For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

Roberto Clemente once remarked, "Anytime you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't do it, you are wasting your time on this earth."

Roberto Clemente made a difference in this world because he showed his faith through his works.

Feeding Sheep Or Amusing Goats

Charles H. Spurgeon had no use for churches that sought to entertain the masses rather than preach the pure Word of God. Spurgeon's observations are just as timely today as they were more than a century ago. To wit:

"An evil is in the professed camp of the Lord, so gross in its impudence, that the most short-sighted can hardly fail to notice it. During the past few years it has developed at an abnormal rate, even for evil. It has worked like leaven until the whole lump ferments. The devil has seldom done a cleverer thing, than hinting to the Church that part of their mission is to provide entertainment for the people, with a view to winning them."

"Where do entertainers come in? The Holy Spirit is silent concerning them. Were the prophets persecuted because they amused the people or because they refused? The concert has no martyr roll."

"Again, providing amusement is in direct antagonism to the teaching and life of Christ and all His apostles. What was the attitude of the Church to the world? 'Ye are the salt', not the sugar candy - something the world will spit out, not swallow."

"I do not hear (Jesus) say, 'Run after these people, Peter, and tell them we will have a different style of service tomorrow - something short and attractive with little preaching - we will have a pleasant evening for the people. Tell them they will be sure to enjoy it. Be quick, Peter, we must get the people somehow!' Jesus pitied sinners, sighed and wept over them, but never sought to amuse them."

"Lord, clear the Church of all the rot and rubbish the devil has imposed on her and bring us back to apostolic methods."

Make sure - very sure - that you and your church are feeding sheep, and not just amusing goats.
