Jackie Robinson was the first African-American baseball player of the modern era. He broke baseball's color barrier in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson wore number 42 on the back of his Dodger uniform, and that number now has been retired by Major League Baseball.
Jackie Robinson died in 1972 at the relatively young age of 53. On Robinson's tombstone is the following quote:
"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."
