Poverty & Weakness

It's interesting to study the churches that Jesus commends.

In Revelation 2:9 (TNIV), Jesus tells the church in Smyrna, "I know your afflictions and your poverty ...."

In Revelation 3:8 (TNIV), Jesus tells the church in Philadelphia, "I know that you have little strength ...."

Jesus doesn't commend megachurches or those with the highest attendance or the biggest building.

Jesus commends two churches that are weak and impoverished.

This should give us pause and perhaps make us reconsider the metrics we use to measure a "successful" church. It's highly unlikely that we would consider poverty and weakness to be the signs of what we might consider a "successful" church. Jesus thought otherwise.

Just as it was when God selected David to be king over Israel, we tend to look at outward appearances - of people and churches - while God looks at the heart.
