Ask + Know + Obey = Wisdom

Frequently we pray that God grants wisdom to a person. But asking God to grant wisdom is only 1/3 of the wisdom equation.

Being truly wise involves 3 steps:

1. Ask God for wisdom.

2. Know that He will give it.

3. Obey what He says to do.

A person has to ask God first. That's what Solomon did in 2 Chronicles 1:10 (TNIV) when he asked for "wisdom and knowledge." Solomon similarly asked God for "a discerning heart" in 1 Kings 3:9 (TNIV).

God then gave Solomon what he had asked for. 2 Chronicles 1:11 (TNIV) says that God was pleased that Solomon had not asked for "wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies ... (nor) a long life ...." So God granted Solomon the wisdom and knowledge that he had requested.

Part 3 is the hardest part. Sometimes, in granting us wisdom, knowledge, and a discerning heart, God reveals things that may go against a person's own grain, desires, or will. But we must submit our own will to His will for us, and we must yield our own will to His will for us.

Don't just pray that God grants wisdom to a person. Pray that the person first asks God for it, then know that he/she will receive it, and then, finally and just as importantly, pray that the person is obedient to what God says.

Part 3 - obedience - is always the hardest step to take.

But it is also the most spiritually rewarding.
